A friend of mine very enthusiastically recommended this product to me a couple of years ago. I bought and used it once and thought a) she's crazy b)she's sadistic, masochistic and seems to need quite a bit of therapy and c) what a waste of money.
If you're not used to waxing, it was a bit hard to take. However, two months ago I finally got fed up with the endless cycle of shaving, particularly my armpits, and still having that brunette armpit shadow. So I thought I would just tough it out and see if the emjoi grew on me. The first few times I used it, I'd have to do it in small time increments and really steel myself through the experience.
Since then, I use it almost every day, all over, even in those sensitive areas (which is still not "fun," but not bad) and it doesn't bother me anymore. I think the trick is to stay on top of the hair growth and not to try remove a whole forest all at once.
Now I would actually say it's painless and no more armpit shadow, and less stinky during hot Southern summer (I'm a sweater so this is a big plus!). I take the Emjoi on vacations and business trips and the best part is when you notice a couple of hairs that need removing, it's a quick, no mess, no hassle process. No worrying about "how old is this blade" and having extra refills for emergencies. I really love it now and take back those thoughts about my friend.

I have had this model for a couple of years.
Positive:
- It does a great job on underarms.
- The fact that the unit is rechargeable is a big +.
Negative:
- It tends to break hair instead of pulling it with root and all, so hair grows back faster than it should.
- The depilating head is slightly curved, which makes it less efficient on flat surfaces and depending on the orientation of the hair, impossible to use. I really have to press it down on some areas, just that so it grabs something.
- You'll have to run it over the skin several time for it to get all hair.

I don't agree with two other reviewers, especially described that this is a junk. I have this cordless version about 5 years now along with corded version (light mauve) over 7 years. Both are performing well as of today. It's painful to epilate but what about waxing? Removing hair from roots is painful but for me, better than shaving. It was very painful when I tried the first few times but now, I barely notice at all. I don't epilate near my periods as skin is very sensitive around that time.
Lasting a product depends on how you take care of it. I don't share mine with anyone else and clean thoroughly after each use. Unless you receive a defective product, you should have this over years. If you are new to epilators, try Remington EP1000 Smooth & Silky Epilator available here at Amazon. It has only one speed and less noisy and less painful. The cost is just half (I paid $25 two years ago). I use Remington for hair from upper lip. I also tried Remington for my legs and underarms but I like Emjoi (both corded and cordless) as it removes hair without a trace. I prefer corded version as this cordless has to be fully charged prior use. Otherwise, it won't perform well.
I'd recommend to use Aloe Vera gel after removing hair as it saves skin from red or bumps. Just stay away from AHA products about 24 hours.
BTW, I don't have any relationship with Emjoi. I paid $50+ and $60+ for myself. Just wanted to share my experience.

Dont' waste your time and money on Emjoi products.
Our epilator purchases have lasted a maximum of 6 months, with an average of 3 months. Emjoi proves to be a poor investment, a poor value. Repair service and customer service are rude and useless.
Emjoi = JUNK.

Obviously ripping out hair is not going to be painless in the bikini area, face or armpits. You do eventually become a little more able to endure the pulling in these areas, but don't throw away that razor--you're still going to need it!
This is an excellent product for making your skin hair-free and super smooth. Be sure to use some sort of product (such as that made by Baxter of California) to help prevent ingrown hairs and red bumps. Lotions claiming to help minimize shaving and hair growth are no match for the Emjoi.
One extra bit of advice: Make sure you pull your skin TAUT so that it doesn't get caught in the Emjoi! This is even more important when the charge starts to die off as it seems much easier to get skin caught at that time.
Used regularly, you can expect 6-12 months of use from this product before it needs replacement (due to blade dulling).
